Setting Up Your Google Business Profile the Right Way

A practical walkthrough of the Google Business Profile details that actually affect whether local customers find and choose you.

For a local business, your Google Business Profile often gets seen before your website does — it's what shows up in Google Maps and the local search results with your hours, phone number, reviews, and photos. A weak or incomplete profile quietly costs you customers who never make it to your site at all. Here's what's worth getting right.

Use your real business name — nothing added for keywords. Google is explicit about this, and stuffing extra words like "best" or a service area into your business name is a policy violation that can get a profile suspended, not a ranking trick.

Pick the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary ones. This is one of the biggest factors in which searches you show up for. A general contractor who mainly does roofing should have Roofing Contractor as the primary category, not just "General Contractor."

List your service area precisely if you don't have a walk-in location. If customers come to you, set your address. If you go to them, hide the address and list the cities and neighborhoods you actually serve — vague or exaggerated service areas tend to backfire in local search.

Fill in hours completely, including holiday hours. An outdated "closed" or "open" status is one of the fastest ways to lose a customer who was ready to call right now.

Add real photos regularly — your team, your work, your location. Profiles with recent, genuine photos generally get more engagement than ones with none, or with only a logo.

Write a complete business description in your own words. This is a chance to say plainly what you do and who you serve — not a place for keyword stuffing, which reads as spam to both customers and Google.

Turn on messaging and Q&A only if you'll actually respond. An unanswered message or a stale, outdated Q&A thread looks worse than not having the feature turned on at all.

Getting these details right is usually a one-time setup with occasional upkeep — not a recurring cost. If you'd like a second opinion on how your profile currently looks, get a free online presence review and we'll tell you honestly what we see.
